Radiation oncology is the treatment of cancer diseases with radiation therapy, using high-energy rays to damage cancer cells and stop them from growing and dividing.
At FHN, radiation treatments are administered by one of the most advanced machines available in the world. We offer Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), a new form of radiation therapy that uses computer-generated images to deliver more tightly focused radiation beams to cancerous tumors than is possible with conventional radiation therapy. This, combined with the use of our multi-leaf collimator (MLC), enables us to deliver a higher dose of radiation to the tumor, no matter what its shape, while avoiding exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.
A radiation oncologist is a physician who specializes in treating cancer using radiation. FHN also offers cancer support services to assist patients and the significant people in their lives. Please refer to Community Services for more information on specific services and support groups.
