Cancer is any malignant growth or tumor caused by abnormal and uncontrolled cell division; it may spread to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or the blood stream.

The Leonard C. Ferguson Cancer Center at FHN Memorial Hospital provides medical oncology, hematology and radiation oncology services all under one roof, close to home for patients and their families. Treatments provided at the Center include chemotherapy (medical oncology) and radiation oncology. The Cancer Center also is involved in research and some clinical trials are available here.

At the Leonard C. Ferguson Cancer Center at FHN Memorial Hospital, you have ready access to your own physician as well as an interdisciplinary team of experts.

Medical oncology or chemotherapy uses drugs to treat cancer. These drugs may be given orally, by injection, or intravenously (IV therapy). Treatments are administered by the FHN staff of registered nurses specially trained in oncology.

A medical oncologist is a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating cancer using chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and biological therapy. A medical oncologist may be the main healthcare provider and treatment coordinator for a person who has cancer.

Radiation oncology is the treatment of cancer diseases with radiation therapy, using high-energy rays to damage cancer cells and stop them from growing and dividing.

At FHN, radiation treatments are administered by one of the most advanced machines available in the world. We offer Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), a new form of radiation therapy that uses computer-generated images to deliver more tightly focused radiation beams to cancerous tumors than is possible with conventional radiation therapy. This, combined with the use of our multi-leaf collimator (MLC), enables us to deliver a higher dose of radiation to the tumor, no matter what its shape, while avoiding exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

A radiation oncologist is a physician who specializes in treating cancer using radiation. FHN also offers cancer support services to assist patients and the significant people in their lives. Please refer to Community Services for more information on specific services and support groups.
