Psychiatrists are physicians who specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses including mental, addictive and emotional disorders. Psychiatric assessment typically involves an examination of mental status, consideration of case histories and psychological tests.
FHN psychiatrists use some of medicine's newest classification schemes, diagnostic tools and treatments. They are certified to diagnose common mental illnesses and addictions and to prescribe medications to help patients bring their symptoms under control. Like other medical illnesses, mental illnesses range from severe and life-threatening disorders to relatively mild and self-limiting conditions.
