Gran Fonda Tour Against Cancer is June 25
Area cyclists and families are invited to enjoy some healthy exercise and see some of the area’s most beautiful roads on their own, or in person as part of a safely socially distanced group for this year’s 15th Gran Fonda Tour Against Cancer.

Dave Fonda, the founder of and inspiration for this event, loved cycling and his community. He began this fundraiser in 2007, dedicated to parlaying his passion into a cause that could help those fighting cancer. Dave lost his own battle with cancer in 2018, and the event has been renamed in his honor. (A Gran Fondo - Italian for “Big Ride” - is a timed long-distance road cycling ride officially defined by the Italian Cycling Federation as being at least 75 miles long.)

The in-person event will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 25 at Oakdale Nature Preserve, 4433 S Cranes Grove Road in Freeport. Riders can choose from various routes or simply enjoy a fun bike ride of any length dedicated to those who are battling or have battled cancer. Virtual participants are asked to complete their chosen routes between Saturday, June 18 and Sunday, June 26.

In lieu of a registration fee, participants and supporters are invited to donate to the Leonard C. Ferguson Cancer Center at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.

To find out more and to register, visit fhn.org/granfonda.

This year’s sponsors are Premier, Winter Construction; Platinum - The Morse Group; Gold - Edelberg Compliance Associates, Loescher Heating and Air Conditioning, and State Bank; Silver - Cyrs Wealth Advisors, The Floor to Ceiling Store, and Stateline Solar; Bronze - San-I-Pak Pacific, Inc and Sparrow.
