Toy Donation Guidelines

Choosing Toys for Children receiving care at FHN: FAQs

Why do children that FHN serves need toys?
Medical appointments can be very stressful for children and their parents. Familiar toys and projects help comfort children by providing joy and distraction. Toys that reduce stress and engage attention in colorful, musical, and soothing ways help children feel better and heal faster.

Are donations of toys and books only needed at Christmastime?
No, we give toys throughout the year whenever children and youth are receiving care. Therefore, donations can be made at any time.

Can I bring my gently used toys?
Due to infection control issues in a healthcare facility, and because some children may have allergies or other sensitivities to toys that have already been played with, we cannot accept gently used toys. New toys ensure that all children will be safe and comforted.

Are there any other guidelines I should follow?
Toys made of strong plastic are the safest and easiest to keep clean. Children who are stressed need calming and soothing toys. Please do not bring toys with violent themes or that shoot or launch missiles or other items.

What toys do you need most?
FHN serves children from newborn to 17 years old. Toys and books for children ages 0-3 years tend to be in demand. Playskool items are popular with this group (stacking cups, shape sorters, board books). For slightly older children, plush animals, board games, matchbox/hot wheels cars, and dolls tend to be popular.

What about books?
Children love books, and so do we! We suggest books with short stories, especially picture books. Just like toys, all books must be brand new. For infants and toddlers, board books (books with cardboard covers and pages) are always appreciated.

Should I wrap my gifts?
We prefer that you do not wrap gifts. That way we can see gifts and match the best gift to each child. If you wish, you can include gift bags in your donation. If you feel you must wrap your gifts, please use clear cellophane such as that used in gift baskets.

May I hand my donation directly to the patients?
To preserve patient confidentiality and reduce the potential for infection exposure, donors are not allowed to visit pediatric units to deliver gifts directly to patients.

Where, how and when do I deliver my donation?
The Foundation staff is prepared to accept your donation of one or more gifts. The Foundation is located on the first floor of the hospital by the Stephenson Street Entrance/Exit. For toy drives or very large donations, please schedule a delivery with the Foundation staff in advance. To make an appointment, call (815) 599-6900.

Can I make a monetary donation to the hospital?

Absolutely! If you would like to donate money, please contact the FHN Foundation Office at (815) 599-6900 or foundation@fhn.org for information on how and where to send your donation.

Is there any reason a donation would be refused?
All books and toys that are donated must be appropriately themed for the children receiving medical care. FHN reserves the right to turn down any controversial items in our sole discretion.
