In Her Own Words...
There’s no slowing down Shirley Bradley. As an active
teenager, she hurt her knees playing basketball but
never quit. Her love of athletics led to a career teaching
physical education, where her joints were taxed on a
regular basis. Eventually, after years of wear and tear,
two scope surgeries, and nearly constant pain, Shirley
knew what she needed: "new" knees.
She turned to Dr. Larry Brinkman, an orthopedic specialist
at FHN Family Healthcare Center - Stephenson
Street. A "bone-on-bone" prognosis led the doctor to
recommend knee replacement surgery. Shirley had one
side done in 2005 and the other completed in 2007,
when she was introduced to all the benefits of lifetime
membership in FHN’s Joint Club.
"The new Joint Club," she explains, "proved very
beneficial. It is a program that helps patients prepare
for and work through the total surgical and recuperative
process. The staff made my appointments, worked with
me at the hospital, guided my efforts during physical
therapy, and encouraged me upon my release. They
even provided tools to ease my recovery, including
weights for home rehabilitation and a comprehensive
guidebook. The FHN Joint Club made the entire
experience much easier. It was very well organized and
extremely motivational."
Now Shirley is back in full swing. Supposedly "retired,"
she rapidly recovered from her surgery and returned to
substitute teaching and enjoying life without pain. "My
experience with FHN exceeded my expectations," she
affirms. "Dr. Brinkman and the entire FHN Joint Club
team of professionals were fantastic."
