Hinds Brings Healthcare, Surgical Instruments to Haiti

FHN Ob/Gyn provider Nicolai Hinds MD, FACOG took part in a mission trip to Haiti this summer, delivering care, compassion and medical training to the people of the western hemisphere's poorest nation.

"The already strained healthcare infrastructure of Haiti was almost crippled by the historic earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010," Dr. Hinds says. "Two years later, they are still struggling to recover from the quake and its aftereffects."

Dr. Hinds was part of a mission team organized and led by Pastor Jeff White of the Freeport Church of Christ. The team was comprised of 21 volunteers, including Dr. Hinds and a team of six medical students and nurses. The medical team performed major gynecologic surgeries on indigent women at Hospital Justinien in Cap-Haitian, Haiti's second-largest city, and shared new techniques and information with the Haitian doctors and doctors-in-training at the hospital.

"I find doing medical mission trips like this to be very rewarding and fulfilling," Dr. Hinds says."It's a chance to help, a chance to give hope to hurting people, and a chance to make a difference. I come back from these trips with a renewed sense of purpose as a physician, and very grateful for the excellent healthcare we have right here at FHN."

"One of the highlights of our two-week visit to Justinien was the presentation of brand-new gynecologic surgical instruments to the hospital," Dr. Hinds says."FHN Memorial Hospital very generously donated the equipment, and I'm grateful for their support, along with the support of my medical team and the generosity of everyone who donated in any way to this effort."

This is not Dr. Hinds' first mission trip to Haiti. He traveled to the island nation last year to provide critical healthcare and to bring local donations of children's underwear and hygiene and toiletry kits for the earthquake survivors.
