Group Forming for Families of Children/Adolescents with ASD

7/21/2011

A new group is forming in Freeport to provide support and educational resources for families of children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), a group of neurologically based developmental disabilities that include autism, Asperger's disorder and more.

“We are inviting families to join us the last Tuesday of each month to share ideas about supporting and caring for children and adolescents with ASD,” said Jeannette Diddens, a clinical therapist at FHN Family Counseling Center – Stephenson County in Freeport and one of the group's organizers. The group's first meeting will take place from 5:30 – 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 26 at the FHN Family Counseling Center – Stephenson County, 421 W. Exchange Street in Freeport.

“There is no charge to participate in the group,” Diddens said. “We are structuring it to be a chance for parents to learn about the resources available to them that can help their child reach his or her highest potential, and an opportunity to talk about how we can help others understand Autism Spectrum Disorders.”

The group is sponsored by The Autism Program Service Center of Rockford, a program of Easter Seals of Metropolitan Chicago and FHN Family Counseling Center. For more information on the group, contact Jeannette Diddens at 815-599-7300.
