Diabetes Education: Gestational Diabetes

Diabetes is a diagnosis no one wants. It impacts all kinds of people in many different ways. Yet a broad majority can thrive despite it with a little determination and a lot of information. That's where the Diabetes Education Team at FHN comes in... and makes a huge difference.

Several instructional programs provide proactive strategies to help a patient with diabetes cope and flourish. Maryanne Bennett, for example, had a diabetes dilemma unique to women when she turned to Certified Diabetic Educator Nicolette Drane.

Diagnosed with gestational diabetes during her second pregnancy, she was concerned her baby could be in danger. Through her classes, she received much-needed education and reassurance. She shares, "I learned I could have a healthy delivery with diligent attention to my blood sugar levels. I followed portion control guidelines, ate wisely, and became confident giving myself insulin. Thanks to my counselors and careful choices, our son, Chase, was born absolutely perfect!"
