Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Illinois

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Illinois
Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS), founded in 1904, is the oldest and largest youth mentoring organization in the United States. Research and anecdotal evidence show specifically that BBBS one-to-one mentoring helps children dealing with adversity overcome the many challenges they face. Little Brothers and Sisters are less likely to begin using illegal drugs, consume alcohol, skip school and classes or engage in acts of violence. They have greater self-esteem, confidence in their schoolwork performance and are able to get along better with their friends and family.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Illinois is a program of FHN Family Counseling Center and is funded in part by the Illinois Department of Human Services and the United Way of Northwest Illinois. >> Donate Now

The Leonard C. Ferguson Cancer Center at FHN Memorial Hospital

The Leonard C. Ferguson Cancer Center at FHN Memorial Hospital
New Technology Brings Leading-Edge Cancer Care Close to Home

When it comes to cancer care, healthcare organizations in bigger cities aren't necessarily better. The latest Cancer Center's new chemotherapy addition, provides comfortable, private space for patients as they undergo treatment. A healing garden outside the new chemotherapy addition provides a natural, beautiful, and peaceful setting that enhances patient treatment and aids in the healing process for those challenged with cancer.

Improvements include a new Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) machine that offers greater accuracy, enabling us to treat the affected area with a higher dose of radiation and leave surrounding tissue undamaged, and a 4-D CT scanner, which not only provides images in 3-D but also accounts for a patient's breathing and movement during treatment. These additions to the Center mean that patients no longer need to visit the hospital for detailed planning of their treatment – every step can be done in-house at the Cancer Center.

Just being close to home for cancer care can also help – patients don't have to endure long drives when they're not feeling well, and friends and family are more able to offer transportation and moral support.

The Cancer Center, which has been affiliated with the UW Carbone Cancer Center since 1994, now leads the area in treatment options.

FHN Hospice

FHN Hospice
Hospice helps those with terminal conditions live life to the fullest as long as possible. It gives options to patients who choose to spend their remaining time with the support of family, friends, and compassionate professionals who provide specialized treatment and ongoing care.

Here are a few hospice facts:

  • Hospice care emphasizes comfort and includes social, emotional, physical, and spiritual support for patients and their families.
  • All FHN Hospice care is provided under a physician's supervision and utilizes nurses, nursing assistants, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers.
  • Hospice care focuses on the person – not his or her disease.
  • Hospice services are not just for people whose death is imminent. The goal is to provide a comfortable and normal life for as long as possible whether it be for weeks, months, or longer.
  • People can transfer into and out of hospice as their situations change.
  • FHN Hospice services are affordable. They are covered 100% by Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans Benefits, and most health insurance providers.

Emergency Room Campaign

Emergency Room Campaign
EMERGENCY! It's a word that generates energy and demands attention.
But for the Foundation, it also symbolizes opportunity, progress, and growth.

The proposed expansion and renovation will improve FHN's emergency department – the one part of the hospital nearly everyone visits. It never closes and the staff is always there to handle everything from scrapes and sprains to heart attacks and strokes. The update will allow for more patient visits, provide single-patient rooms throughout the ER for increased privacy, and equip the ER for special-needs patients. These improvements will allow FHN Memorial Hospital's ER to continue leading the way in emergency care for northwest Illinois and southern Wisconsin.

Mildred F. Ferguson Scholarship Fund
Mildred F. Ferguson Scholarship Fund

Mildred F. Ferguson Scholarship Fund
Mildred Ferguson served as a nurse in World War I. She was a woman of action who was generous with her time and her resources. For years, she was a volunteer at Freeport Memorial Hospital and gave much time to children through her activities with the Amity Society.

It's because of her love for nursing, our community and FHN that Mildred's daughter, Nancy F. Seeley, established the Mildred F. Ferguson Nursing Scholarship endowment fund. Nancy was proud of her mother's dedication to nursing and understands the importance of education. She also knows that going to nursing school is challenging for those who need to continue to earn a paycheck while in school.

The Mildred F. Ferguson Nursing Scholarship not only assists with tuition, books and fees, but it also covers any income loss due to pursuing a degree. All scholarship recipients are required to work at one of more than 15 FHN locations after attaining their degree to share their skills with our patients and staff.

Please considering helping us build this endowment by making a gift today. The endowment allows our scholarship program to live on year after year as only the return will be granted to students.
